Surrender a Pet
Having to surrender a pet can be a tough and sad decision. Life changes, death, illness, moves, or other circumstances sometimes mean the kindest and most compassionate way to care for our pets is to find them a new home that will be better for their well-being. If you find you are in a position where you need to surrender a pet, please consider the following:
Keeping animals out of shelters is the highest priority and should be a last resort. Shelters can be stressful and scary for animals who have been living in a home - especially senior animals.
If your pet came from another shelter, rescue group or breeder, please contact them first for assistance.
Reach out to friends, family and other acquaintances to try to find a direct home placement for your pet.
Utilize webpages, such as www.getyourpet.com or www.rehome.adoptapet.com where you can create a pet profile for your pet, review applications, and meet potential adopters on your own.
If you need further assistance or wish to apply to surrender your pet to ASL, please send an email with details about your pet and why it must be rehomed. For us to be able to help or consider taking in a surrendered animal, details such as age, breed, vet history, medical conditions, bite history; whether the animal has a good relationship with cats, dogs, kids, etc. are required. Please send as much detail as possible. We cannot guarantee we can take the animal, but having all the details helps and expedites our consideration.
