The Adoption Process & Information
Interested in an animal that is available for adoption through Animal Service League? Please read about our adoption requirements and screening process here before you begin.
Adopting a pet is a long-term commitment and we pride ourselves on matching the right animal with the right home and owner. Because we spend a lot of time with our animals, and our shelter is cage-free, we know our animals’ personalities, needs and requirements well. Our goal is to find a lifetime match for all animals, while taking your lifestyle and expectations into careful consideration.
Important Information to Know Before Applying:
ASL does not do same-day adoptions.
Adopters must be 21 years of age or older. There is no exception to this rule.
ASL has the right to decline any potential adopter at any time during the screening process.
We do not adopt animals into homes that are located on school or college campuses, or any type of student housing.
Our shelter is open by appointment only. We do not accept drop-by visits or walk-ins.
If an animal is posted on our website, then it is still available for adoption. Please do not send emails asking if an animal is available.
All potential adopters are screened fairly, and in the same manner, for adoption.
Our screening, visitation and adoption process requires vet and landlord references (if applicable) and an over-the-phone counseling session.
If you are a renter, make sure you know your landlord’s pet policy, including all additional pet fees for which you will be responsible.
A completed adoption application submission through our website is the FIRST step to beginning the process. Once received, an ASL representative will reach out to you by phone within 1-3 business days to review and discuss your application and explain the process in more detail. If you wish to proceed, we will contact your vet and landlord references, if applicable, and then be back in touch with you to schedule a shelter visit.
Dog adoptions require an in-home visit.
Shelter visits and adoptions are typically scheduled on Saturdays.
You will be allowed to visit and spend time with adoptable animals at our shelter before deciding about the adoption of a specific animal.
The entire adoption and screening process takes approximately one week, so please be certain you are willing to collaborate with us during this time prior to applying for adoption.
